Spider Mites on Christmas Cactus

Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera bridgesii)

Symptoms

  • fine webbing at segment joints or along the edges
  • tiny pale stippling on the segment surface
  • dull, dusty-looking segments
  • segments that feel slightly gritty to the touch

Causes

Winter heating overlapping with bloom season

The heating season that dries indoor air overlaps almost exactly with this plant's bloom cycle, so a Christmas Cactus showing mite damage is very often dealing with the driest air of the year at the same time it's under the additional stress of flowering.

Spread from nearby infested plants

Mites move between plants placed close together or via air currents, and an infestation already established on a neighboring houseplant frequently spreads to Christmas Cactus within a couple of weeks.

Water-stressed segments

Because this plant stores water in its flattened segments rather than in true leaves, letting it shrivel between waterings pulls moisture out of the very tissue mites are feeding on, and a limp, dehydrated segment loses its infestation fight much faster than a plump, well-hydrated one.

How to Fix It

  1. 1

Move the hanging or shelved pot well away from other plants right away — Christmas Cactus is often displayed in clustered groupings for the winter bloom display, and that close spacing is exactly what lets mites walk or drift onto neighboring segments.

  2. 2

Hold each cascading stem under a lukewarm shower stream and run a finger along the flattened segment joints, where mites and their webbing tend to collect out of sight in the notches between segments.

  3. 3

Spray insecticidal soap or diluted neem oil over every segment surface, top and bottom, and repeat every 5 to 7 days for three rounds minimum to catch mites hatching between treatments.

  4. 4

Hold off on heavy watering while treating, since this is also the plant's bloom or post-bloom period and a wetter environment plus treatment stress together can trigger bud or segment drop; keep the mix on the drier side of its normal range instead.

  5. 5

Set a small humidifier or pebble tray nearby rather than misting the segments directly, since standing water in the segment joints can encourage rot on a plant already stressed by mites and treatment.

Prevention

  • Give hanging or shelf-grouped plants some breathing room rather than clustering them tightly for display
  • Keep humidity reasonable through the dry winter months when blooming and mite risk overlap
  • Avoid letting the segments shrivel from underwatering, since drought-stressed tissue is more vulnerable
