Leggy Growth on Coleus
Coleus (Coleus scutellarioides)
Symptoms
- long, thin stems with leaves spaced far apart
- sparse, open growth rather than a full, bushy shape
- plant leaning noticeably toward a window
- flower spikes forming frequently alongside the sparse growth
Causes
Insufficient light
In lower light, coleus stretches its stems in an effort to reach a brighter source, and because this species already grows fast, this stretching happens quickly and can produce a noticeably leggy plant within just a few weeks of inadequate light.
Lack of pinching and pruning
Coleus needs regular tip pinching to stay bushy; without it, the plant's fast-growing stems continue extending from their tips rather than branching, quickly producing a sparse, open form even in reasonably good light.
Allowing the plant to flower
Once coleus sets flower spikes, it redirects energy away from vegetative branching and toward the flowering stem, which is part of why regularly removing flower spikes as they form helps keep the plant compact and full.
How to Fix It
- 1
Move the plant to a brighter location with several hours of bright light, including some direct sun if possible.
- 2
Pinch back the growing tips regularly, ideally every few weeks during active growth, to encourage branching.
- 3
Remove flower spikes as soon as they appear, unless seed production is specifically desired, to keep the plant's energy focused on foliage.
- 4
Pinch or cut back existing leggy stems into their stretched section — coleus responds to this so vigorously that a hard prune now often produces a noticeably bushier plant within just a couple of weeks.
- 5
Use the pruned cuttings to propagate new plants, since coleus roots very easily and quickly from cuttings.
Prevention
- Provide consistently bright light, including some direct sun
- Pinch growing tips regularly throughout the growing season
- Remove flower spikes promptly to keep energy focused on foliage
- Take fresh cuttings periodically to maintain young, compact growth rather than relying on an aging plant indefinitely
