Mealybugs on Fiddle Leaf Fig — White Fluff in the Wrong Places
Fiddle Leaf Fig (Ficus lyrata)
Symptoms
- white cottony deposits
- white fluffy masses in stem joints
- sticky honeydew
- yellowing near infested areas
- distorted new growth
Causes
Introduction from newly purchased plants
Pseudococcidae (mealybugs) are soft-bodied, slow-moving insects that survive transport in their cottony wax coating. A new Ficus plant purchased from a nursery or garden center may carry mealybug colonies in the leaf axils and stem crevices that are easy to miss before purchase.
Warm, dry overwintering conditions
Mealybugs reproduce fastest between 70–90°F (21–32°C) with low humidity — precisely the conditions of heated homes in winter. What begins as a small infestation in autumn can become a substantial colony by February if not caught and treated.
How to Fix It
- 1
Isolate the plant from all other houseplants as soon as mealybugs are identified. Crawlers can travel between touching plants.
- 2
Using a cotton swab soaked in 70% isopropyl alcohol, wipe every visible mealybug colony. Check every stem junction, leaf axil, and the stem base near soil level.
- 3
Follow up with a full-plant neem oil spray, mixed at roughly a teaspoon of neem to a few drops of dish soap per liter of water, to catch any colonies tucked into crevices the swab missed.
- 4
Repeat the alcohol swabbing and neem spray every 7 days for 4–5 weeks. Mealybugs can be completely eliminated with this protocol, but patience and consistency are essential.
Prevention
- Inspect all new plants for white fluffy deposits in stem joints before purchasing or at least quarantine for 4 weeks after.
- Examine the FLF's stem axils monthly during routine maintenance.
- Avoid overcrowding plants, which creates humid microclimates in stem joints that mealybugs prefer.
