Yellow Leaves on Money Tree
Money Tree (Pachira aquatica)
Symptoms
- leaves turning yellow before dropping
- yellowing on multiple leaflets of the same leaf
- yellowing that follows a recent relocation
- yellow lower leaves while new growth looks fine
Causes
Overwatering
Although Pachira aquatica's wetland origin gives it more tolerance for moist soil than many houseplants, a typical indoor pot lacks the natural water movement of a swamp, so soil that stays saturated for extended periods still deprives the roots of oxygen and produces yellowing as a stress response.
Recent relocation or environmental change
Money Tree can react to a change in light, temperature, or position with a round of yellowing and leaf drop even when watering and other care remain appropriate, essentially a stress response to adjusting to new conditions rather than a specific care mistake.
Underwatering
Less common than overwatering given this species' moisture tolerance, but a plant allowed to dry out severely and repeatedly can still yellow, typically alongside crispy or curling leaf edges rather than the soft yellowing overwatering produces.
Natural leaf aging
A single older leaf near the base of the plant yellowing and dropping occasionally, while new growth continues normally, is routine turnover rather than a problem.
How to Fix It
- 1
Check soil moisture; if wet or soggy, stop watering and allow the top two inches to dry before watering again.
- 2
If the plant was recently moved or its light conditions changed, give it several weeks to adjust before making further changes, since this alone can explain a temporary round of yellowing.
- 3
If soil is dry and leaves show crispy edges alongside yellowing, water thoroughly and establish a more consistent watering rhythm going forward.
- 4
When the soil has stayed soggy for weeks rather than days, slide the root ball out of the pot and inspect each braided trunk's root mass individually — trim away anything dark and mushy, then repot the whole braid into fresh, well-draining mix.
- 5
If only occasional older leaves yellow while the rest of the plant grows normally, simply remove them and continue routine care.
Prevention
- Water when the top one to two inches of soil have dried, rather than keeping it constantly moist
- Minimize sudden changes in light or location once the plant is settled
- Ensure the pot drains well despite this species' relative tolerance for moisture
- Remove naturally aging leaves as routine maintenance
