Overwatering Oxalis
Oxalis (Oxalis triangularis)
Symptoms
- soggy soil that never dries
- yellowing leaves across the plant
- soft or mushy stem bases
- musty smell from the pot
- sudden collapse of multiple stems
Causes
Continuing a growth-phase watering pace into dormancy
Oxalis water needs shift substantially between active growth and dormancy, and a routine that works during a growth phase (weekly watering, for example) can badly overwater the same plant once it slows down or enters dormancy, since a resting bulb cluster uses very little water.
Poor drainage in the pot or soil mix
Plain potting soil packs down around the shallow bulb cluster and holds onto more water than the bulbs can tolerate, even when the watering frequency itself would be fine for a plant with a deeper, more extensive root system — the bulbs simply sit in that damp zone longer than they should.
Saucer water left standing
Excess water that drains through the pot but is left sitting in a saucer gets wicked back up into the soil over time, effectively keeping the root zone wetter than a single watering event would suggest.
How to Fix It
- 1
Stop watering immediately and let the soil surface dry out to a depth of at least an inch before the next watering.
- 2
Empty any saucer under the pot after each watering rather than allowing water to sit and be reabsorbed.
- 3
If the pot lacks drainage holes, repot into one that has them, or drill holes if the container material allows it.
- 4
If soil has been wet for an extended period, unpot and inspect the bulbs; discard any soft or discolored ones and repot healthy bulbs into fresh, well-draining mix.
- 5
Going forward, let bulb dormancy set the schedule rather than the calendar — press into the top inch of soil each time, and remember this plant needs far less water when it's between active growth cycles than while it's actively leafing out.
Prevention
- Always check soil moisture before watering rather than watering on autopilot
- Use a pot with drainage holes and a mix amended with perlite
- Reduce watering frequency substantially once the plant shows signs of entering dormancy
- Empty saucers promptly after each watering session
