Peace Lily Root Rot — The Overwatering Cycle That Causes It and How to Escape
Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum wallisii)
Symptoms
- root rot
- mushy brown roots
- wilting with wet soil
- musty soil smell
- yellow leaves rapid
Causes
Chronic overwatering from responding to every droop
This is the mechanism specific to peace lily. Because the plant signals thirst so dramatically (dramatic wilting), conscientious owners water it frequently. But if the plant droops more often than once every five to seven days, the root zone never has a chance to partially dry. This sustained moisture creates the oxygen-depleted conditions that allow root rot pathogens to establish. The cruel irony: the owner is watering in response to the plant's own signals, yet still causing root rot.
Poor drainage
Any combination of no drainage holes, standing water in a saucer, or heavy compacted soil creates root rot conditions independently of watering frequency.
How to Fix It
- 1
Unpot the plant. Peace lily roots are cream-white when healthy and firm. Root rot makes them dark brown to black, soft, and slimy. Examine the entire root ball.
- 2
Remove all rotted tissue with sterile scissors. If the rot has reached the base of leaf stems (petioles), remove those affected stems as well.
- 3
Repot in fresh, well-draining mix in an appropriately sized pot with drainage holes. A slightly smaller pot than the original may be appropriate if substantial roots were removed.
- 4
Going forward, check the soil with a finger before responding to any droop — peace lily's dramatic wilt is a poor watering cue on its own. If it droops more than once a week even with adequately moist soil, look at root-bound conditions or the room environment instead of adding more water.
Prevention
- Resist watering in response to every droop — check the soil first
- Check the soil with a finger before watering rather than trusting the plant's dramatic droop as your cue
- Use a pot with drainage holes and empty any saucer water within 30 minutes
- Avoid overly dense, water-retaining soil
