Pothos Not Growing — When One of the Fastest Houseplants Stalls
Golden Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)
Symptoms
- no new leaves emerging from the vine tips over 4–6 weeks during spring or summer
- vine tips present and green but not extending
- existing leaves looking normal while no new growth appears
Causes
Root damage from overwatering suppressing growth
A Pothos with compromised roots cannot allocate resources to new vine growth. It is in survival mode — maintaining existing leaves while the root system attempts to regenerate. This is the most common cause of growth arrest in an otherwise apparently healthy-looking Pothos. The above-ground plant may not look sick, but the roots are the issue. Check the soil: if it has been consistently moist, this is the probable cause.
Very low light preventing enough photosynthesis for growth
While Pothos tolerates low light, it does not grow actively in very dim conditions. In a room with only artificial fluorescent lighting or more than 10 feet from any window, the plant maintains itself but stops producing new growth. It is living on stored resources with no photosynthetic surplus to put toward new leaves.
Winter dormancy-like slow-down in any season due to cold
A Pothos exposed to cold temperatures below 60°F — from cold floors, cold drafts, or a cold room — will stop growing even in summer. The plant requires warmth above 65°F for active vine extension.
How to Fix It
- 1
Check soil: if consistently wet, stop watering and allow a full dry-out. If the soil dries and growth resumes within 4–6 weeks, overwatering was the cause.
- 2
Assess light: if the position is very dim, move to brighter indirect light. New vine tip growth typically restarts within 2–4 weeks in better light.
- 3
Check temperature: ensure the plant is above 65°F throughout the day and night.
- 4
Begin light fertilizing: once light and water are correct, monthly quarter-strength balanced liquid fertilizer provides the nutrients needed for active growth.
Prevention
- Maintain warmth above 65°F, adequate indirect light, and correct watering to support the rapid growth Pothos is capable of
