Mealybugs on Marble Queen Pothos: Cottony Colonies at Node Junctions

Marble Queen Pothos (Epipremnum aureum 'Marble Queen')

Symptoms

  • White, cottony, or fluffy deposits at the nodes — the stem junction points where leaves attach
  • Sticky honeydew residue on stems and upper leaf surfaces
  • Yellowing or distortion of leaves near infested nodes
  • For Marble Queen specifically: cottony deposits can initially be confused with the white variegation — but mealybug deposits are in the stem junction crevices, not on the leaf surface itself

Causes

Mealybugs establishing at node junctions on pothos stems

The nodes on pothos vines — where each leaf attaches and where aerial roots emerge — are protected crevices that mealybugs favor. Planococcus and Pseudococcus species colonize these junctions and feed on the phloem sap at the most nutrient-dense point of the vine. On Marble Queen specifically, a subtle identification challenge exists: the plant's own white variegation and the white cottony mealybug deposits are both white, making early colonies harder to spot than on an all-green plant. Careful attention to the texture difference (smooth variegated leaf surface vs. fuzzy, cottony pest deposits) and the location (on leaves vs. at stem crevices) distinguishes them.

How to Fix It

  1. 1

Inspect every node junction along all vines. The cottony deposits are in the crevices between leaf petiole and stem, not on the leaf blade surface. Under a lens, the actual insects (oval, waxy-coated) are visible in the cottony mass.

  2. 2

Once you're sure you're looking at an actual deposit and not just the leaf's own white patterning, touch it directly with an alcohol-dipped cotton swab — the waxy coating dissolves and the insects underneath die on contact.

  3. 3

Follow with a neem oil spray to all stems and nodes. Repeat weekly for 3 applications.

Prevention

  • Inspect nodes during each watering — the junction crevices are the mealybug establishment site
  • Quarantine new cuttings and plants before adding to a collection with Marble Queen
  • When examining Marble Queen specifically, touch the white areas: leaf variegation feels smooth and is part of the leaf surface; mealybug deposits feel fuzzy and are removable
