Yellow Leaves on N'Joy Pothos
N'Joy Pothos (Epipremnum aureum 'N'Joy')
Symptoms
- leaves turning uniformly yellow before dropping
- yellowing starting on older, lower leaves
- soil consistently wet alongside yellowing
- yellow leaves with soft, mushy texture
Causes
Overwatering
N'Joy's smaller root system relative to a mature Golden Pothos means it has less buffer against consistently wet soil; roots deprived of oxygen for extended periods struggle to function and the plant sheds leaves, usually beginning with the older ones, as a stress response.
Natural leaf aging
A single lower leaf turning yellow and dropping occasionally, while the rest of the plant continues producing healthy new growth, is normal turnover and not a sign of a problem, particularly on older vines further from the growing tip.
Low light over an extended period
Because so much of an N'Joy leaf is already white rather than green, this cultivar has less chlorophyll-bearing tissue to begin with than a solid-green pothos, so a dim spot cuts into an already-thin energy margin faster; the visible result over a few months is leaves that yellow evenly across the whole vine rather than just at the tips or edges, alongside new growth that comes in smaller.
Nutrient deficiency
Because so much of an N'Joy leaf is white rather than green, the plant has a smaller chlorophyll-producing surface to begin with; once the soil's nutrient reserve runs low, usually a year or more after the last repot, that limited green tissue yellows faster and more evenly than it would on a fuller-green pothos.
How to Fix It
- 1
Press a finger into the soil; if it comes away wet or the mix feels soggy, hold off on watering entirely until the surface has dried before testing again.
- 2
When the compact root ball has been sitting damp for days rather than drying between waterings, slide the plant free of its pot, cut away any roots that have gone brown and mushy, and settle it into fresh, fast-draining mix.
- 3
One older vine leaf yellowing here and there, with the newer white-and-green growth still crisp, is this cultivar's normal turnover — snip it off and keep to the same care routine.
- 4
Shift the pot toward a brighter window if it's been sitting in a dim corner for an extended stretch.
- 5
If the current growing season has passed without a single feeding, work a half-strength liquid fertilizer into the next watering — this cultivar's reduced green tissue leaves less room to mask a nutrient shortfall than a fully green pothos has.
Prevention
- Let the top inch or two dry out fully before the next watering — N'Joy's compact root mass has little buffer against soil that never gets a chance to breathe
- Provide bright, indirect light rather than a dim location
- Keep up a light monthly feeding through the growing season instead of letting it lapse for a year or more
- Repot every year or two into fresh mix to replenish nutrients
