Pothos Wilting — Fast Diagnosis for One of the Most Treatable Plant Emergencies

Causes
Underwatering
Pothos signals thirst through dramatic wilting before almost any other symptom appears. The vines go limp, leaves droop downward, and the whole plant looks like it's given up. This is one of the clearest plant-to-human distress signals in the houseplant world and one of the most easily fixed. Water the plant and the pothos typically recovers more quickly than any other comparable houseplant — within an hour or two in mild cases.
Root rot (overwatering)
Wilting despite moist soil indicates that root damage has broken the water delivery system. The plant is water-stressed not because the soil is dry but because the roots can no longer absorb and deliver moisture. This is the more serious scenario and requires inspecting the root system for rot.
Extreme heat
Pothos in direct hot sun or near a heat source may wilt temporarily during the hottest part of the day, recovering once temperatures moderate. Unlike the other causes, heat wilting is transient and does not require soil intervention.
How to Fix It

Check the soil immediately. Dry soil and wilting: water deeply and wait one to two hours. Wet soil and wilting: do not water — investigate root health.

If dry: water until water flows freely from drainage holes. Bottom-watering for 15 minutes is effective if the soil has become hydrophobic.

If wet and wilting: unpot the plant. Examine roots. Remove all rotted tissue and repot in fresh, well-draining mix.
